One of the world’s healthiest grains, brown rice is a popular staple food enjoyed in various cultures all across the globe. It is an excellent source of nutrients, such as dietary fiber, magnesium, manganese and selenium.
But despite its status as a healthy superfood, brown rice hides an invisible danger. Most conventional rice products available on the market are contaminated with arsenic. (h/t to FoodRevolution.org)
Arsenic is one of the most toxic poisons in the world and is certainly not a substance you would want in your food supply. But due to rampant use of fertilizers and pesticides in agricultural crops, substantial levels of arsenic have been found in most types of rice, including brown and white rice. In fact, brown rice has been reported to contain up to 80 percent more arsenic than its white counterpart. This is because arsenic has a tendency to accumulate in the outer hull of brown rice.
Rice often absorbs arsenic directly from the soil it is planted in. This type of arsenic is inorganic arsenic, which is frequently present in soil, rocks and irrigation water, as opposed to organic arsenic, which is often found in plant and animal tissues. Inorganic arsenic is especially dangerous because it is considered the more toxic form of arsenic. (Related: Tap water across American southwest found to be HEAVILY CONTAMINATED with cancer-causing arsenic.)
This is incredibly alarming considering that compared to most other food crops, rice accumulates significantly higher levels of arsenic, making rice crops the single largest food source of inorganic arsenic.
Some rice products that have been found to contain alarmingly high levels of arsenic include rice milk, rice crackers, rice bran, rice-based breakfast cereals, brown rice syrup and cereal bars that contain rice or brown rice syrup.
Arsenic has no smell or taste, so you won’t even know that it’s in your food supply. It may even already be in your body right now and you wouldn’t realize it. If arsenic accumulates in your body, it will negatively impact your overall health.
In small doses, arsenic may result in headaches, drowsiness, confusion, stomach aches, abdominal pain and diarrhea. However, larger doses of arsenic may result in more severe health conditions, such as dementia, neurological problems, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, skin lesions and other similar skin conditions.
Since arsenic is toxic to your nerve cells, it may also impair your overall cognitive function, leaving you with poor memory, learning ability, concentration, intelligence and social competence.
Furthermore, arsenic has been classified as a category 1 carcinogen. The most common cause of arsenic-related mortality is lung cancer, but arsenic is also associated with various other types of cancer, such as kidney, liver, bladder and skin cancers.
You can help reduce your overall risk of exposure to arsenic in brown or white rice by making sure that you always thoroughly wash and cook your rice with clean water that is low in arsenic. But if you want to be sure your rice is free from arsenic contamination, you need to be very selective about where you source your brown rice.
